Introduction

Vijayan's Laboratory for Polymeric Biomaterials is located in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Alabama State University. The lab's primary research focus is on musculoskeletal tissue engineering, with expertise in the development of both synthetic and natural polymeric biomaterials. These include 3D printed lattice scaffolds, hydrogels, and nanoparticle-reinforced polymer composites. A central strength of the lab is its application of plasma surface modification techniques to enhance material bioactivity and functionality.

Current research projects include:

  • Design and 3D printing of architected lattice scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, integrated with finite element modeling (FEM) to predict mechanical performance and guide scaffold optimization,

  • Engineering surface-patterned hydrogels for chondrogenic differentiation and contact guidance in cartilage repair,

  • Developing plasma-modified polymeric scaffolds and hydrogel systems for enhanced cellular interactions and musculoskeletal regeneration.
