A Bit About Me
Dr. Vineeth Vijayan is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Alabama State University (ASU), where his research centers on the development of advanced polymeric biomaterials for musculoskeletal tissue engineering. His work integrates the design and fabrication of novel material platforms including hydrogels, 3D printed polymer lattice scaffolds, and nanoparticle-reinforced composites with a strong emphasis on plasma-assisted surface modification to enhance their bioactivity and functionality.
Dr. Vijayan’s research aims to establish engineered biomaterial systems that mimic the structural, mechanical, and biochemical environments of bone and cartilage tissues. His lab actively develops architected scaffolds using additive manufacturing combined with finite element modeling (FEM) to predict performance, alongside hydrogel-based systems designed to direct stem cell differentiation and tissue regeneration.
Before joining ASU, Dr. Vijayan was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he worked under the mentorship of Prof. Vinoy Thomas and Prof. Yogesh Vohra.
He has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals, including Biomaterials, Small, Biomaterials Research, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, ACS Applied Nanomaterials, and Journal of Materials Chemistry B. Dr. Vijayan serves as a reviewer for journals such as Acta Biomaterialia, ACS Applied Nanomaterials, ACS Applied Biomaterials, and Current Opinion in Biomedical Engineering. He is also a member of the editorial boards of BMC Biomedical Engineering (Springer Nature), Journal of Functional Biomaterials, and Polymers (MDPI).
